Suitable footwear selection
Your choice of footwear can significantly affect your feet, especially when you are required to put more weight on them throughout the day. Opt for shoes that provide adequate arch support, cushioning, and space for the toes to move freely.
One type of shoe that is great for standing on your feet all day is barefoot shoes. This is because barefoot shoes strengthen the muscles in your feet, allowing you to correct your posture and reducing the pain in your knees and hips.
Regular exercises and stretching
Make sure to take regular breaks to stretch and exercise your legs, feet, and ankles. Aim to sit down rather than stand and elevate your feet if you are able to. One great stretching exercise is to raise the heels, which can help to relieve cramping and strengthen your calf muscles.
Also, lift your feet and point your toes towards the floor. Doing so will stretch the feet and enhance circulation, preventing further aches and pains. Alternatively, you can roll a ball under your foot using light pressure for several minutes.
Practice good posture
When on your feet, make a conscious effort to keep your back as straight as possible and your shoulders back. You may find yourself becoming slouched as the days continue – avoid this from occurring as it can put strain on your feet, back, and neck.
It’s also important that you don’t stand with your legs close together. Spreading them apart slightly means you’re able to use both sides of your body equally to shift your weight more proportionally. And do soften the knees, avoiding locking them when standing. This can help to prevent knee and lower back pain.
Good foot care and hygiene
Being on your feet all day may cause perspiration and cramping, which could potentially lead to more serious conditions. Practice good foot hygiene by washing and drying your feet thoroughly after each shift and consider having regular foot massages.
Massaging your feet at night with an oil or a moisturiser can ease tension and improve your sleep. Using a pumice stone, remove any hard skin on your feet; this is beneficial for preventing the formation of callouses, blisters, and fungus.
